The Sahuarita Food Bank began in a closet, serving one or two households a week. Ten years later, we serve up to 200 households in our six hours of food distribution a week. We provide 450 weekend nutrition BackPacks for low-income students in eight area schools and have two school-based food pantries for their communities. In total, we distribute 930,000 pounds of food.
We have run out of space in our leased facility and it is highly inefficient. Our food bank visitors wait outside, sometimes for a long time. Our 200+ volunteers have to set up and take down the food distribution area, double-handle food, and work outside in all kinds of Arizona weather.
Today, as the Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center, we continue to feed more and more people and have begun to provide programming and services to our visiting households, including health screenings, volunteer tax preparation, an early literacy program, parenting program. We plan many more programs and services with an emphasis on health/nutrition, family support, and workforce development
Please join in supporting the Nourishing our Community Capital Campaign.
